DEVELOP ASPECTS OF PROFESSIONALISM

IN THE BUSINESS WORLD.

PwC Sophmore Dinner

A social gathering with employees of PwC to learn more about the company and their employees.

Being able to sit down with PwC employees gave me the opportunity to network and gain knowledge about a new company. I spoke with a man who does International Tax and who is originally from India. After hearing his story and job description, I created new career goals for myself. Hearing his experiences have further convinced me to work for a global firm and to take opportunities to see the world.

Mays 50th Anniversary Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt for the kids of Mays partners and alumni during the Mays 50th anniversary celebration.

For the May's 50th Anniversary Celebration, I volunteered to lead a scavenger hunt with other Business Honors students. With a partner, the two of us were in charge of three children and we directed them all around the Wehner building. The scavenger hunt was a way to get the kids familiar with what is offered at Mays Business School and to fill them in with random interesting facts. Despite the kids actually doing the hunt, I learned a lot about Mays as well. I got the opportunity to see all of the departments and to really focus on all small details on the walls, like the important people who make Mays so aMAYsing.

The Big Event

University wide community service

Being apart of the Big Event and getting to serve residents in the Aggie community was a great way to spend my free time. This year, my group and I stained a lovely couple's house and spent time getting to know the two. Doing volunteer work is always beneficial, but since I got to help other Aggies, my heart is even fuller. As well as further developing a sense of awareness and compassion for serving others, I also extended my Aggie network.

BH Movie Night: I am not your Negro

Documentary film that juxtaposes a manuscript by James Baldwin covering the 1960s civil rights movement with the current Black Lives Matter cause

After watching this documentary, my perspectives changed and I gained new insights into how black people are actually treated at Texas A&M. Although I already had some background information on the 1960s civil rights movement and present-day movement for Black Lives Matter, I obtained more knowledge from watching "I am not your Negro" and having a discussion afterwards with some of the black community at A&M. Hearing their stories and different way of life truly opened my eyes; I did not realize the amount of hardships and drawbacks people are still experiencing currently in today's society. From here on out, I plan to take more action if I see anything wrong being done and I will further advocate and foster the development of diversity in my student organizations.

Business Honor Etiquette Dinner

Business Etiquette

The Business Honor's Freshman Etiquette Dinner was held at Cafè Excel, hosted by Ms. Randi Mays-Knapp. Ms. Mays-Knapp coached everyone proper etiquette on eating and how to demonstrate yourself at a professional event. I learned how to appropriately eat my meals and how to engage in conversations if I am ever at a banquet, having a meal with a future boss, or at a recruiting event. I will use the skills and knowledge I learned from this Etiquette Dinner in my future when I attend scholarship banquets and dinners with business professionals.

Mays Transformational Leader Speaker Series: Dave Swiney

KPMG LLP - Litigation Consulting and Forensic Investigations

During the month of October of 2017, I enjoyed my first Mays Transformational Leader Speaker Series that was led by Dave Swiney, a partner with KPMG LLP. Mr. Swiney discussed how to be an effective leader, how to look for the right job, and then gave each of us students general advice as when journey through college. One main takeaway I gained from this experience was that ethics and integrity are crucial to the foundation of being a great leader and also an important factor to look for in a potential workplace. This Speaker Series had a large impact on me and gave me the mindset  and confidence that I have the ability to be as great as a leader as Mr. Swiney one day.

Business Honor's AVID Program

College Station Middle School AVID

Once every two weeks, for about six weeks, I joined with another Business Honor's student to present interactive lessons to ten Eighth Graders in the College Station Middle School AVID Program. Throughout enhancing the skills of the students to help them further succeed in high school and college, I also gained valuable presentation and social skills. Learning how to properly give a presentation will help me in future business classes when I will need to present a major project to my professors.
